Itinerary

  1. 1
    0:00Design and briefing

Meet your silversmith, look through sample pieces, and sketch what you want to make — most people choose a ring, a pendant or a pair of earrings. The teacher will tell you honestly whether a design is achievable in two hours.

  2. 2
    0:20Sawing and shaping

Cut your shape from a sheet or length of silver with a jeweller’s saw, then file and shape it. This is the slowest part and the one that decides how the finished piece looks.

  3. 3
    0:55Soldering

Join the piece with a torch and solder — closing a ring, attaching a bail to a pendant, or fixing a decorative element. The teacher works alongside you for this step.

  4. 4
    1:25Texturing and stone setting

Add texture by hammering, stamping or filing, and set a stone if your design calls for one. This is where two people making the same shape end up with completely different pieces.

  5. 5
    1:45Polishing and finishing

Polish the piece up to a mirror finish, a brushed finish or an oxidised black, then take it home in a box. You keep what you make, and it is finished before you leave.

About the Silver Class Sanur

Sanur is the oldest resort town in Bali and it has aged into the calmest. The beachfront is a paved walking and cycling path rather than a strip of clubs, the sea is flat behind its reef, and the pace is set by long-stay visitors, families and people who came here in the eighties and kept coming back.

The class fits that temperament. It is unhurried, it is indoors, and it is the kind of thing you do on a day with nothing else booked. It is also our own neighbourhood — the office is in Sanur — which makes it the easiest location to arrange at short notice.

The practical argument is the harbour. Sanur is where the fast boats to Nusa Penida and the Gilis leave from, which creates two very specific gaps: the morning you arrive back from Penida with an afternoon to fill, and the day the crossing is cancelled for weather and a snorkeling trip has evaporated. This is five minutes from the pier and runs whatever the sea is doing.

It suits families, older travellers, anyone staying in Sanur for a longer stretch, and anyone whose boat did not sail.

Safety, weather and cancellation
