About Kintamani

Kintamani is the caldera of Mount Batur, an active volcano in the highlands of Bangli Regency. The floor of that caldera is covered by the lava field left by past eruptions: black rock, grey ash, low scrub and almost no green. It looks nothing like the rest of Bali.

That surface is why the ATV ride here is different from every other track on the island. You are managing loose rock and ash rather than clay and mud, with long open sight lines and the caldera wall standing above you the whole way. Lake Batur sits below on the far side.

The altitude matters too. At around 1,000 metres the air runs six to eight degrees cooler than Ubud, mornings are often clear before cloud builds over the summit, and a light jacket is worth bringing even in the dry season.

Getting there

The Kintamani ATV base on the caldera floor is roughly 60 to 75 minutes by car from central Ubud and about two hours from Seminyak, Canggu or Kuta. The access road down into the caldera from the Penelokan rim is steep and easy to overshoot, so use the pin sent on WhatsApp.

Best time to go

Early morning is clearest — cloud usually builds over Mount Batur from late morning onwards. The 07:00 and 09:00 departures also pair naturally with a Mount Batur sunrise trek, which typically finishes by 09:00.

Kintamani questions

What is there to do in Kintamani?

Kintamani is best known for Mount Batur sunrise treks and the caldera views over Lake Batur. The ATV ride across the black lava field on the caldera floor costs IDR 600,000 per person for two hours and runs from 07:00.

Can you do a Mount Batur sunrise trek and ATV on the same day?

Yes, and it is a common pairing. A Mount Batur sunrise trek usually finishes by 09:00, and the Kintamani ATV base runs departures from 09:00 onwards, so both fit comfortably into one morning.

How cold is Kintamani?

Kintamani sits at roughly 1,000 metres inside the Batur caldera, where the air runs about 6 to 8°C cooler than Ubud or the coast. Early morning departures are worth a light jacket year-round.

Is the Kintamani ATV ride muddy?

Mostly no. The Kintamani ATV route crosses volcanic rock, ash and grey sand, so riders finish dusty rather than caked in mud. Parts of the ash track do soften in the wet season.
