About Jatiluwih

Jatiluwih is the rice terrace that people who know Bali recommend instead of the famous one. It is vast, it is a working agricultural landscape rather than a photo stop, and its subak irrigation system — the cooperative water management Balinese farmers have run for around a thousand years — is why UNESCO listed it as World Heritage.

The ATV route threads the tracks at the edges of those terraces, following the subak channels that feed them, then drops into the forest on the lower slopes of Mount Batukaru, the second-highest volcano in Bali.

It is the gentlest ride of the six and the least expensive, which makes it the usual choice for families and first-time riders who want scenery rather than mud. It is also the quietest — Jatiluwih sees a fraction of the traffic that Ubud does.

Getting there

The Jatiluwih ATV base is roughly 90 minutes by car from Ubud and about 90 minutes to two hours from Canggu or Seminyak. The final mountain road up from Tabanan is narrow and slow, so allow more time than a map estimate suggests.

Best time to go

Morning, without much question. Jatiluwih sits at around 700 metres and catches more rain than the coast, particularly in the afternoon, and the clearest views across the terraces are early.

Jatiluwih questions

Is Jatiluwih worth visiting?

Jatiluwih is a UNESCO World Heritage rice terrace landscape in Tabanan, far larger and much less crowded than the terraces near Ubud. The ATV ride there costs IDR 400,000 per person and is the cheapest in the range.

What is the subak system?

Subak is the cooperative irrigation system Balinese farmers have used for roughly a thousand years, sharing water between rice fields through a network of channels and temples. It is the reason the Jatiluwih terraces are UNESCO-listed.

Do you ride through the Jatiluwih rice terraces?

The Jatiluwih ATV route follows tracks along the edges of the terraces and the subak channels rather than crossing the planted fields, which are working farmland protected as a World Heritage site.

How long does it take to drive to Jatiluwih?

Jatiluwih is roughly 90 minutes by car from Ubud and 90 minutes to two hours from Canggu or Seminyak. The last stretch is a narrow mountain road, so allow extra time.
