Itinerary

  1. 1
    0:00Design and briefing

Meet your silversmith, look through sample pieces, and sketch what you want to make — most people choose a ring, a pendant or a pair of earrings. The teacher will tell you honestly whether a design is achievable in two hours.

  2. 2
    0:20Sawing and shaping

Cut your shape from a sheet or length of silver with a jeweller’s saw, then file and shape it. This is the slowest part and the one that decides how the finished piece looks.

  3. 3
    0:55Soldering

Join the piece with a torch and solder — closing a ring, attaching a bail to a pendant, or fixing a decorative element. The teacher works alongside you for this step.

  4. 4
    1:25Texturing and stone setting

Add texture by hammering, stamping or filing, and set a stone if your design calls for one. This is where two people making the same shape end up with completely different pieces.

  5. 5
    1:45Polishing and finishing

Polish the piece up to a mirror finish, a brushed finish or an oxidised black, then take it home in a box. You keep what you make, and it is finished before you leave.

About the Silver Class Nusa Dua

Nusa Dua is a planned resort enclave: gated, landscaped, secure, and deliberately separate from the rest of the island. It works extremely well for what it is, and it produces a particular kind of guest — someone on a resort holiday or attached to a conference, with a couple of free hours and no appetite for a two-hour drive to Ubud.

This is the activity for that person. Two hours, a short transfer, and something to show for it. Conference delegates with a free afternoon and resort guests who have run out of pool are the two groups who book it most.

It works well for families staying at the big Nusa Dua properties, too. Children over ten can take a bench, and the sheltered beach and the watersports at Tanjung Benoa are ten minutes away, so a morning in the water and an afternoon at a workbench is an easy day to build without leaving the area.

If you are staying in Nusa Dua and want one authentic thing that is not a hotel activity, this is the shortest route to it.

Silver Class Nusa Dua questions

What is there to do in Nusa Dua besides the beach?

Is the silver class suitable for children staying in Nusa Dua?

Children aged 10 and over can take their own bench in the Nusa Dua Silver Class, working with a teacher alongside them. Younger children can watch a parent work but cannot use the tools.

Can I combine the Nusa Dua silver class with watersports?

Yes. Tanjung Benoa, where the snorkeling and watersports run, is about ten minutes from the Nusa Dua silver studio, so a morning on the water and an afternoon at the workbench fit into one day.

How much is the silver jewellery class in Nusa Dua?

Do I need any experience to take a silversmithing class in Bali?

No experience is needed for the Silver Class. It is designed for complete beginners, and the teacher works alongside you for the technical steps such as soldering. Most people finish a ring or a pendant within the two hours.

What can you make in a two-hour silver class?

How much silver is included in the class?

Each Silver Class booking includes up to 5 grams of silver. Pieces that need more silver than that are charged for the extra material at the studio, and you keep whatever you make.

Do I keep the jewellery I make in the silver class?

Yes. You keep whatever you make in the Silver Class, and it is finished, polished and boxed before you leave — there is nothing to collect later and nothing to post home.

What is the minimum age for the silver jewellery class?

The minimum age for the Silver Class is 10, because the workshop involves a soldering torch and sharp tools. Younger children can come along and watch a parent work, but cannot take a bench themselves.
