About the Ayung Rafting
The Ayung is the river most people in Bali raft, and for good reason. It runs through a deep green gorge below Ubud with grade II and III rapids — enough to soak you and make the boat buck, not enough to frighten anyone. Between the rapids there are long flat stretches where the gorge closes in overhead and the loudest thing is birdsong.
The stretch has a genuine oddity in it: sections of the canyon wall have been carved in relief with Ramayana scenes and Balinese figures, cut directly into the rock face above the water. The guides pull the boat in so you can look at them properly.
Twelve kilometres of river, two hours on the water, six people to a boat with a licensed guide steering from the back. It is a straightforward, well-run day and it is the right first raft for anyone who has never done it.
