Itinerary

  1. 1
    0:00Harbour meet and snorkeling briefing

Meet at the harbour, get fitted for mask, snorkel, fins and buoyancy jacket, and take the drift-snorkeling briefing before heading out while the water is at its calmest.

  2. 2
    0:30Snorkeling the north-west reef

Two to three sites among Toyapakeh, Gamat Bay and Wall Point, with about 25 minutes in the water at each.

  3. 3
2:30Back to land and drive west

Rinse off, change into dry clothes and start the drive across the island. The west coast road is narrow and slow, which is built into the timing.

  4. 4
    3:30Kelingking Beach

The cliff viewpoint over the T-Rex headland and the cove far below. The path down to the sand is steep, exposed and takes about an hour each way — the viewpoint itself is where most people stop.

  5. 5
    4:45Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong

The collapsed circular cove at Pasih Uug with its rock arch, and the tidal pool beside it. Whether the Billabong can be entered depends entirely on the swell that day, and the guide makes that call.

  6. 6
    6:00Crystal Bay

Down to Crystal Bay for the last stop — a swim, or just the beach and the view out to Nusa Ceningan.

  7. 7
    7:00Return to the harbour

Back across the island to the harbour in time for the afternoon boats.

About the Penida West Day Tour

Most people who go to Nusa Penida for one day try to do both halves of it: the reef and the cliffs. This is that day, run in the sensible order — in the water first while the sea is calm and the light is good, then onto the road for the west coast once the boats get busy.

The land half takes in the four places the island is known for. Kelingking Beach is the cliff shaped like a dinosaur’s spine with the white sand cove 200 metres below. Broken Beach, or Pasih Uug, is a circular collapsed cove with a natural rock arch to the sea. Angel’s Billabong is the tidal rock pool next to it. Crystal Bay is where the day finishes, usually in the water again.

A word on the roads. Nusa Penida is small but the west coast roads are narrow, steep and slow, and the distances take longer than the map suggests. Seven hours is a genuinely full day, and it is why this works better with a driver than on a scooter you rented that morning.

Safety, weather and cancellation

Tours run in light rain — the tracks are at their best when they are wet. If conditions are genuinely unsafe the activity is rescheduled or refunded in full, and that call is made by the guide on the day.

Penida West Day Tour questions

What does the Nusa Penida west island tour include?

The Nusa Penida Snorkeling and West Island Tour includes snorkelling at two to three reef sites with gear and an in-water guide, plus a guided land tour of Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Bay across about seven hours.

How much is the Nusa Penida west island day tour?

The snorkeling and guiding rate for the Nusa Penida west island day tour is IDR 110,000 (about USD 8) per person. The fast boat from Sanur, island transport and site entrance fees are arranged separately, so ask on WhatsApp for the full day cost.

Can you do Kelingking Beach and snorkeling in one day at Nusa Penida?

Yes. The standard Nusa Penida day runs snorkelling on the north-west reef in the morning while the sea is calm, then the west coast landmarks including Kelingking Beach by road in the afternoon, taking about seven hours in total.

How long does it take to walk down to Kelingking Beach?

The path down to the sand at Kelingking Beach takes roughly an hour each way and is steep, exposed and uneven, with rope handrails in places. Most visitors on the west island tour stop at the clifftop viewpoint instead.

Can you swim at Angel’s Billabong?

Angel’s Billabong on Nusa Penida can only be entered when the swell is low, because waves break over the rim of the pool without warning and the rocks are sharp. The guide decides on the day, and at high swell the pool is viewed from above only.

Is one day enough for Nusa Penida?

One day covers the west coast of Nusa Penida — Kelingking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong and Crystal Bay — plus a morning of snorkelling. Seeing the east coast as well, including Diamond Beach and Atuh, needs a second day.

Are the roads on Nusa Penida difficult?

The west coast roads on Nusa Penida are narrow, steep and slow, and journeys take longer than the distances suggest. This is why the seven-hour day tour uses a driver rather than assuming visitors ride themselves.
