Every ATV track in Bali sells the same two formats: single, one rider on one quad, and tandem, two people on one quad with one of them driving. The choice affects your price, who is allowed to ride and, honestly, how much fun each person has. Here is how to decide.
The short answer
- Book single if you are 12 or older (16 at Green Bali), reasonably fit, and want to control your own machine. Most adults enjoy single more.
- Book tandem if you are riding with a child under the driving age, with someone who does not want to drive, or you want the lowest price per person.
What tandem actually means
A tandem ATV is a standard 250cc (or 350cc/450cc where offered) automatic quad with a longer seat and a grab rail for the passenger. The driver sits in front and does everything: throttle, brakes, steering. The passenger holds the rail or the driver's waist, leans with the bike on corners and gets equally muddy. Only one person drives for the whole ride; some guides allow a swap at a safe stopping point on the flat, but it is not guaranteed and never mid-trail.
The bike is the same size, so a tandem pair is heavier and the machine works harder on steep climbs. That is why operators with bigger engines, Alasan ATV (450cc) and Beji River (350cc), sell tandem versions of them: the extra torque makes a real difference with two adults aboard.
Price comparison per person
Tandem packages are priced per bike, not per person, so two people sharing always pay less each than two singles. Meet-at-venue prices:

At Rp 16,000 to the dollar, a couple riding tandem at Green Bali pays about US$ 38 in total instead of US$ 63 for two singles. Transfer packages follow the same pattern: for example Kuber tandem with Ubud transfers is Rp 1,350,000 for two versus Rp 900,000 per single rider (and the single transfer package needs two riders anyway).
Who should ride tandem
Families with children. Children below the driving age (12 at most tracks, 16 at Green Bali) can only ride as passengers. Minimum passenger ages are 5 at Wahana, Pertiwi and All New Bali Adventures, 6 at Kuber, 7 at Green Bali, and "younger than 12" at Beji River and Bukit Sari. A parent drives, the child sits behind. Couples where one person does not want to drive. Riding pillion still gets you the cave, the mud and the photos without the responsibility. Plenty of couples do exactly this.
Anyone unsure about their strength. Steering a quad through clay and over ruts is a workout for the arms and core. If that sounds like a lot, sit behind someone who enjoys it.
Who should ride single
Confident adults who like driving. The fun of ATV is the throttle. Two singles riding together still ride as a group with the same guide, so you do not lose the shared experience.
Riders who want the big engines solo. Alasan's single 450cc (Rp 850,000) and Beji River's single 350cc (Rp 550,000) are the most powerful rides in Bali and are wasted with a passenger.
Taller or heavier riders. A tandem pair over roughly 160 kg combined will find the 250cc quads sluggish on the climbs. Either go single or pick a 350cc/450cc tandem.
Mixing formats in one booking
You can. A family of four might book one tandem (parent plus child) and two singles at the same track and slot; all four ride in the same group. Each package is booked separately on the site (one booking per package), so book the tandem and the singles for the same date and time slot — the venue puts everyone in the same group. Does the passenger need to do anything?
Hold on, lean into corners with the driver, keep feet on the footboards through water, and shout if something is wrong. Passengers wear the same helmet and boots and are covered by the same basic insurance. They will also get exactly as muddy as the driver, so pack a change of clothes for both.

For two adults who both like driving: two singles, and choose a track with character, Kuber or Green Bali. For a parent and child, or a couple on a budget: tandem at Green Bali (Rp 600,000 for two) or Beji River (Rp 475,000 for two). For two adults who want tandem without the sluggish climbs: Alasan's tandem 450cc.
